Dear Logan Families,

I’m sure you’ve seen the many COVID notification emails over these past few weeks. Clearly we are seeing an increase in cases here at Logan and across AAPS. In many instances, we have observed that students who test positive have the most mild symptoms (especially if they’re fully vaccinated). Something as little as a runny nose or fatigue can indicate a possible COVID infection. Therefore, I cannot emphasize enough the importance of monitoring for symptoms and keeping your child home anytime even the most mild symptoms are observed. When we have positive cases come to school, it increases the risk of shutting down classrooms, grade levels, and even our school for everyone. As a parent, I know how hard it can be to plan to have a sick child at home (especially when they don’t seem that sick!), but it is also the most important step we can take to keep our doors open and in-person learning thriving for all of our Logan Leopards. Thanks in advance for your cooperation. 

I’m sharing a Friday update this week and unless I have any new information that needs to be shared next week, this will be the only Weekly Update you’ll receive this week and next. I’ll resume my regular Monday updates the following week. This Weekly Update includes important information about:

Bus Route Suspension - Important

Starting Monday, January 31, 2022, Bus 94 (AM only) and Bus 110 (AM and PM) will resume regular service. 

Starting Monday, January 31, 2022 through Friday, February 11, 2022, Bus 76 (AM and PM) and Bus 148 (AM and PM) will be suspended. Families of students on these suspended routes will have to find alternate transportation to and from school. We anticipate services will resume Monday, February 14. 

****Please note that canceled routes means a significant increase in cars moving in and out of the parking lot during arrival and dismissal. Therefore, I’m sending a few important reminders to help this process go smoothly. Please be patient! Our most important priority is ensuring everyone’s safety. 

Arrival Reminders: 

• Pull forward all the way to the bottom of the hill before unloading. This allows as many cars to enter the parking lot as possible. Do not stop in front of the playground to unload if there are no cars in front of you. 

• Only cross at the crosswalk. Do not cut between cars in the drop off line.

Dismissal Reminders: 

• Have your Driveline number ready. For families who are new to picking up at dismissal, this is the number we use to alert your child’s teacher that you have arrived at school to pick them up. Christy Landefeld recently sent everyone’s numbers via email. Check your inboxes and make sure you have this number when you arrive at school. 

• Keep pulling forward in the car line at the end of the day! Don’t stop until the car in front of you stops. Your children will wait on the steps by the front entrance and walk down the hill to load. We have a lot of adults helping make sure your child gets to you. If you are uncomfortable having your child walk to your car, please park (either in the parking lot or along Traver) and walk to meet them.

Updated COVID Protocols 

In consultation with the Washtenaw County Health Department, AAPS has updated our COVID safety protocols. Those protocols can be found here. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out.

Happy Friday! I have two important updates about school next week. Please be aware of the following: 

January 26th: Virtual School Day

Per Dr. Swift's email to families, next Wednesday, January 26, will be a virtual day of school. It is also an early release day. Students will log into their virtual classrooms at our usual arrival time (first bell: 8:42am, second bell: 8:45am). They will be dismissed at our early release time, 1:18pm. Classroom teachers will share more detailed schedules for the day. Students should not report to the building at all on January 26, but we look forward to seeing them virtually in each class.

Continued Bus Route Suspension

Our AAPS Transportation department has notified us that we will continue with suspended bus routes through January 28. Bus 110 (AM and PM) and Bus 94 (AM only) are suspended and families must find alternate transportation. I apologize for the inconvenience. Please know that the canceled buses means a drastic increase in the number of cars entering and exiting our parking lot. We’ve made some adjustments to ensure a safe arrival and dismissal, but I ask for everyone’s patience as we try to get you in and out of the parking lot as quickly and as safely as possible. Please remember to pull all the way forward to allow as many cars as possible to enter the lot.

Dear Logan Families,

NWEA Testing

We will administer winter NWEA tests starting next week. All students in grades K-5 will take the reading test and the math test. Individual classroom teachers will communicate their testing schedule. Please help your child do their best by ensuring a good night of sleep. 

COVID-19 Updates

In the coming days, AAPS will be releasing some updated guidance on our COVID-19 mitigation strategies and quarantines based on recently released Washtenaw County Health Department guidelines. Please look for a districtwide email. As I said in last week’s bulletin, we’re focused on doing everything we can do to keep Logan open. Please continue to monitor your child for symptoms every day using this screener. If your child is symptomatic (even mild symptoms), please keep them home until you can get them tested. Continue to alert us if your child or anyone in your household tests positive. And of course, AAPS continues to encourage anyone in your household who is eligible to get vaccinated (see below for AAPS Vaccination Clinics). 

In an effort to minimize the number of emails in your inbox, I will only send one community-wide COVID-19 case notification email each day. I will include the total number of cases that have been reported (as opposed to sending a separate email for every single case). I will also continue to send classroom notifications. 

AAPS Vaccination Clinics

Space remains at two more vaccine clinics for AAPS students, including the booster shot for students 12-15 years old, as approved by the CDC last week. Registration is required as we are allotted a specific number of vaccines by MDHHS, whose contractor administers the vaccine.

Dear Logan Families,

We are looking forward to seeing our Logan Leopards tomorrow as we return to in-person learning! Thank you to all of our families for your support and partnership over the past week. We know that these virtual days come with some challenges, and we truly appreciate all of your efforts keeping your kids logged in and engaged. 

I’ve received a number of emails asking what families can do to help support Logan as we navigate this latest surge of COVID cases. While our staffing looks strong right now, we know that this latest variant is highly contagious and has the potential to severely impact our ability to safely run school. Therefore, I am asking our Logan families to do everything they can to keep our Logan community healthy. Specifically, I am asking all families to help us keep the doors open by doing the following: 

• Prioritize COVID-19 vaccinations and boosters for every eligible person in your household

• AAPS strongly encourages vaccinations for all members of your household who are eligible to receive them. This includes children ages 5-18. AAPS has a number of vaccine clinics in the coming weeks (see below), and vaccines are widely available in our community. If you need help locating a vaccine, don’t hesitate to reach out. 

• Review good masking practices with your child before sending them to school tomorrow

• The CDC recommends wearing multi-layer masks that completely cover the mouth and nose. Please remind your child to keep their mask over their nose and mouth except when eating or drinking. High filtration masks like a N95 or KN95 are also recommended. AAPS is trying to secure high filtration masks for our students, but if you have access to them at home, consider sending your child with one. 

• Monitor closely for COVID symptoms and keep your child home if they emerge

• Please keep your child home if they aren’t feeling well, especially if they are experiencing any of the symptoms described in our daily pre-screening document. 

There is nothing I want more than to keep our doors open and in-person school running. Let’s work together as a school community to make this happen!

In-District Transfer (IDT) Window

The first round of the IDT application window opens on January 10th. At the elementary level, only families applying for Young 5s can apply during this first window. In-district transfer is for families who live in the Ann Arbor Public Schools attendance area but wish to send their child to a school outside their homeschool’s attendance area. CLICK HERE to learn more about In-District Transfer.  CLICK HERE to complete the IDT application starting January 10th. The round 2 In-District Transfer Window will open on February 28. This window will include all other grade levels. 

AAPS Vaccination Clinics

AAPS is thrilled to be able to offer four more vaccine clinics for AAPS students that will include the booster shot for students 12-15 years old, as approved by the CDC this week. All clinics will offer the Pfizer vaccine.These clinics will be held at Pioneer High School in the school cafeteria. Please enter at the Clock Tower entrance off Stadium Blvd.

Registration is required as we are allotted a specific number of vaccines by MDHHS whose contractor administers the vaccine. You will not receive a confirmation when you register, but if the registrations are closed you will receive a notice that your registration is unable to be processed.

We will send a notification the day before the clinic as a reminder to all who have registered.

Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful break! As you know, AAPS has modified its reopening of schools following this winter break. Schools are closed today and tomorrow. We will open for virtual remote learning on Wednesday, January 5th through Friday, January 7th. We anticipate a return to in-school learning for students and staff on Monday, January 10, 2022. I do recognize the challenges that these sudden transitions create for families, and I want to thank the entire Logan community for your flexibility and patience. We truly appreciate your partnership as we navigate this ongoing pandemic.

Virtual School Schedule

We will observe our current, regular school day schedule. School begins at 8:45 AM and will end at 3:48 PM. We will follow our regular specials schedule and our regular lunch schedule as well. Individual classroom teachers will communicate a detailed class schedule to families so you can help your child navigate the day. We will also be taking attendance in the morning and afternoon. Please help your child log in on time so they are not marked absent. 

Virtual School Instruction

Students will be receiving live instruction via zoom. Teachers will provide zoom links to families. These links will also be available through teachers’ Schoology pages, though we recognize that some students and families may not have as much experience with Schoology, especially in the younger grades. If you have any trouble finding your child’s zoom link, please contact their teacher.

We also recognize that a full day of uninterrupted screen time is not ideal for our elementary age students. Therefore, the day will be broken into chunks of live instruction, independent work time, and breaks. The Logan staff is experienced in virtual instruction and can provide developmentally appropriate learning opportunities for your child during these days of remote learning. Rest assured that even when your child is working independently, your child's teacher will be available to support them should questions arise. 

Students will attend their regularly scheduled specials. Your child’s teacher will help them know how to get to their special area classes. Students with IEPs will continue to receive special education services as well. Academic support services like Reading Intervention and English Language Learning supports will continue too. All of these service providers will be reaching out to families to make sure you know how to access these services.

​​AAPS Food Distribution During Virtual Learning - Wednesday, January 5 2022

AAPS will offer food distribution on Wednesday, January 5 at Pioneer and Skyline High Schools between 1:00pm and 6:30pm. Bundles of food and milk will be provided for AAPS students including vegetarian options.

Drive-Up Distributions - 1:00-6:30pm

Pioneer High - please use the front circle off Stadium Blvd entrance. 734-994-2265

Skyline High - please use the drive around the back of the school across from the woods. 734-994-7085

Please do not leave your car. Staff will be there to serve you. Please wear a mask when staff approach.

Home Deliveries

If you are not able to come to Pioneer or Skyline to pick up food please call 994-2265 starting Monday, January 3 and no later than 4pm Tuesday, January 4.

An AAPS bus will deliver food to your home. Please let us know how many AAPS students will need food in your household and if you need the vegetarian option. Deliveries will be made on Wednesday, January 5. You can choose one of these delivery times:

• 10:00am-12noon

• 2:00-4:00pm

• 4:00-6:00pm

AAPS Vaccination Clinic

The Ann Arbor Public Schools are hosting a vaccination clinic for students ages 5 to 18 on Tuesday, January 4th from 4 - 6:30 PM at Pioneer High School. Students can receive their first or second dose, and eligible students can receive a booster shot. Information on the vaccine clinic is available here.

Register for a time slot for the vaccine here. A parent or guardian must accompany students 17 years of age and younger. Please print the Parent Consent Form for each student and bring a hard copy with you. Include the student’s weight.
