This will be my last Weekly Family Update of 2023! I wanted to wish all of our families a very restful winter break, and a happy New Year!

Winter After-School Classes

Logan’s Office Needs Pants and Leggings

We are running low on extra pants and leggings in the office. If your kids have pants they’ve outgrown, consider donating to Logan. We are looking for all sizes. Please do not send jeans or other structured pants. Sweatpants and leggings work best. Thanks in advance! 

Student Illnesses

We are seeing a lot of different illnesses going around at Logan. Hopefully, our upcoming break will help things settle down a bit. However, we are asking that families take a few steps to keep our community healthy including: 

• Monitor your child for any signs of illness, such as cough, sore throat, runny nose, fever, and fatigue, and stay home if ill.

• Monitor your child for any COVID symptoms using the Student COVID-19 Symptom Checklist. Consider testing if symptoms are present.

• No matter what the illness, your child should not return to school until free of fever, vomiting and diarrhea for at least 24 hours. Use your best judgment if they are fever-free but are experiencing symptoms that make it difficult to learn at school.  

Community Resources Available

Mother's Reaching Hands is an appointment-only service that provides clothing, diapers, bibs, coats, boots, shoes, blankets, toys, and sometimes cribs or other supplies for families in need. Washtenaw & Wayne County residents only, proof of income requested. Call (313) 364-0338 for an appointment. Pickup is at 218 E. Forest, Ypsilanti.

Introducing New Logan Staff

This past fall, Rose Brooks, Logan’s Intensive Resource Teacher, gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, and she will be spending the year at home with her new little one. I am very pleased to share that we have hired Janese Havasi as Rose’s replacement. In addition, I am very happy to share that we recently hired Jill Lemens as an additional Resource Room Teacher at Logan. Ms. Lemens will be splitting her time between Logan and Angell elementary. 

Please join me in welcoming these two new teachers to our school community! 

Supporting Logan Families Through Winter Giving - There’s still time to give! 

Logan serves many families. Some in our community are facing significant financial hardship. We have families that struggle with food insecurity, housing instability, and lack of access to items like clothing, school supplies, and toys. We are planning to support those families in need through our Winter Giving Campaign. During this campaign, we are asking for warm winter gear, clothes, gifts for the holiday season, and gift cards. Early Release Reminder

Wednesday, December 6, 2023 is an Early Release Day. Students will be dismissed at 1:00pm. All families must ensure that they have a plan for their children at the end of the day on early release days. 

Winterfest Invitation

Last year, our Logan PTSO hosted the first ever Logan Winterfest, and it was such fun! The Logan community gathers at Buhr Park and we spend the evening ice skating and drinking hot chocolate, and  loved i! I’m looking forward to it again this Friday! PTSO covers the cost of admission, skate rentals, and a hot beverage! I hope you’ll be able to join us for this great community event. Details are included below and in the PTSO eBackpack.

Supporting Title 1 Schools Through Winter Giving - More Ways to Give! 

In addition to supporting Logan families through a winter giving campaign (see above), Logan’s PTSO has organized a winter giving campaign to support other schools in need as well. We want to ensure that ALL AAPS children are supported this year. You can learn more about the items we’re collecting here. 

Winter Clothing Reminder

Students will go outside everyday as long as the temperatures are above zero degrees and it is not raining. Please make sure your child comes dressed for the weather. We recommend layers! If possible, students should have jackets, snow pants, hats, gloves, and boots. I also recommend keeping an extra set of dry clothing in their backpacks! 

School Closure Reminder

As we move into winter, I want to remind everyone of our school closure procedures. AAPS will determine if/when schools need to close due to inclement weather. If the decision is made to close schools, AAPS will notify all students, staff, and families of any change in school day plans as far in advance as possible to support our families in making necessary arrangements. As soon as a weather-related school decision is made, announcements will be made via school messenger (or automated phone and email system). Notifications will also go out on social media and through media outlets. 

Families who have moved or changed phone or email contacts should reach out to the Logan’s Main Office to ensure your contact information is updated. You can reach the office at 734-994-1807.

Our lost and found is overflowing! If you see an item that belongs to your child, please send them to pick it up or feel free to stop by before school or after school to grab it. Items not claimed by December 15 will be donated.
