Dear Logan Families, 

Last week, we celebrated Pi Day. As part of the celebration, we served pie to all the students in our cafeteria. This project was organized by Logan’s math coach, Natalie DePasquale. Coach Natalie was recently featured in the AAPS District News. Check out this article on another exceptional Logan teacher! Both Natalie and I wanted to thank the MANY families who sent pies in and to all of the parents who volunteered to serve pie. It was such a fun day, and we are so grateful to all of the families who helped make it happen 

We also hosted the Disability Awareness Workshop on Wednesday, March 8 for our fourth and fifth grade students. This was the first time we hosted this event since the pandemic and it was great to see its return! Thank you to our PTO for helping organize it, and thank you especially to our DAW planning committee, Virginia Allen, Erin Barbossa, and Laura Emmer.

I’m a little late getting my weekly update out to families this week, but I wanted to share some important updates before we head into spring break. Please take a moment to read through this Weekly Update.

Our Arriving to School On Time

We are seeing more and more students arriving late each day. I wanted to remind the entire Logan community about the importance of arriving at school on time. Teachers start the day right away and when your child arrives late, they are missing important instruction. The first bell rings at 8:42 AM, the second bell rings at 8:45 AM, and instruction starts immediately after the second bell. Please do everything you can to bring your child to school on time.

Talent Show - New Date…Again!

Because of the school closures after the ice storm, we had to postpone Logan’s Talent Show again. We are going to give it one more shot by rescheduling again. We have rescheduled the event for Thursday, April 13 at 6:00 PM. We hope you can make it!  

Logan Elementary Science Fair

The LOGAN ELEMENTARY SCIENCE FAIR is coming soon!!!  This year, the science fair will be held on April 19th, from 6-7:30 pm. Students are welcome to bring a collection, experiment, presentation, model or demonstration.  

Please sign up to participate by April 5th, through this form: https://forms.gle/rKwGcvPXuj8sMypt7, or on the paper form sent home with your student before Spring Break (coming in Friday folders). All 5th graders are participating, so no form needs to be filled in for 5th graders.

Family Traditions and Heritage Festival

Mark your calendars! Logan’s Family Traditions and Heritage Festival will be Friday, April 28, 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM. This festival is an opportunity for us to celebrate and honor our school’s multicultural identity, our heritages and our family traditions 

through sharing our favorite meal! Join the fun and ask other Logan families to participate with you! We are currently looking for volunteers willing to bring a family favorite dish to share. Details can be found here. 

Huron Book Bash

This spring, on April 15th from 1-3pm, Huron will be hosting a Book Bash for the AAPS community. We will have activities and crafts galore, including bookmark decorating, mini bowling, face painting, and more! We will also have events such as raffles and story time. There will be food, beverages, and live music performed by Huron's renowned musicians.

The purpose of this event is to engage the community through literacy and community service. To be admitted to the event, attendees need to donate at least one book. All donated books go to Huron students in need and Washtenaw County's Court Involved Youth Schools program. Attendees are also encouraged to make monetary donations, which will be donated to our food pantry, a resource students depend on a daily basis for their everyday meals.

Congratulations to our Academic Games Teams

On March 2-4, a team of twelve Logan and three Thurston students competed in the Michigan League of Academic Games State Tournament.  They did a great job, and we are so proud of them. They went to the state tournament for the first time ever, and they did amazing! Each of our teams placed, and we had several teams place in the top three at the State Tournament. 

Additionally, Ms. Jackson is one of the coaches of the Academic Games teams and she was honored with the MLag Hal Hauer Volunteer Award. She was recently featured on the AAPS District News along with Skyline senior David Lee! You can read the full article here. Great job, Ms. Jackson and David! 

Family Traditions and Heritage Festival

Mark your calendars! Logan’s Family Traditions and Heritage Festival will be Friday, April 28, 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM. This festival is an opportunity for us to celebrate and honor our school’s multicultural identity, our heritages and our family traditions

Food Gatherers Food Drive at Logan

There’s only a few days left for the Food Drive. We’re accepting perishable food donations and financial donations. You can donate directly to Logan’s Team Fundraising page here. Here are the complete details: 

Each spring, the Ann Arbor Rotary Club partners with our local food bank, Food Gatherers, in a campaign to alleviate summer hunger in our community.  The AAPS participates in this endeavor that benefits our students, families, senior citizens and neighbors. The 2023 campaign begins on Monday, March 6 - March 17, 2023.

This year, skyrocketing food prices have stretched the budgets of so many of our neighbors. More individuals and families in our community are turning to their local food pantries and meal programs to fill the gaps.

The 2023 campaign will once again collect nonperishable food in addition to financial contributions.

 

Logan will be accepting food donations. We’ll have large boxes at the front entrance if you’d like to donate. 

Financial donations are also welcome. Financial contributions continue to be the primary focus of this fundraising drive allowing Food Gatherers to use their bulk buying power to distribute more food in our community. Donations of $25 or more made through the Rotary Fights Summer Hunger food drive will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $10,000. A gift of $25 provides enough food for 150 meals when you include the match!

Pi Day at Logan

Tuesday, March 14 is Pi Day. Logan’s Math Coach, Coach Natalie DePasquale has organized activities for our Logan Leopards to build their understanding of Pi. As a celebration, we thought it would be fun to serve pie in the cafeteria on March 14. That’s where we need some help. We are asking Logan families to donate pies for us to serve. We need approximately 2-3 pies per classroom to be donated. They can be any flavor, but please be sure ingredients are provided on the label. If you are able to donate, please contact your child’s teacher to let them know you’ll be donating a pie. We will also be recruiting some volunteers to help us serve pie. Please keep an eye out for a Sign Up Genius from our PTO. 

New Report Card Dates

AAPS has delayed winter report cards by one week. Report cards will now be sent home on Friday, March 24.

AAPS PTOC $20 for $30k Campaign

The Ann Arbor PTO Council is proud to present this first-ever district-wide fundraiser to directly support our less-resourced schools. We believe that our children’s school experience should not be based on the resources of the families at that school, yet that is the system we have.

Background: PTOs typically supplement gaps in school funding, supporting enrichment opportunities (field trips, guest speakers, materials, etc.), purchasing materials and supplies, and sponsoring community events. Because of wealth and resource inequities among public schools in our community, not all PTOs can raise equal amounts of money. In AAPS elementary and K-8 schools, per-student PTO income ranges from $40 per student per year to $238. For the past several years, the PTO Council has worked with school reps, caretakers, teachers and the district to identify these gaps and create steps for improvements.

How you can help: We are looking for 1500 individuals to contribute $20 (or more) to show our community’s commitment to creating a better system for all.

Funds raised will be distributed to PTOs at Title I elementary schools in the fall. Our goal is to boost their budgets by $10 per student, helping the 3,000 AAPS children at these schools. We know this is just a drop in the bucket, and that one small fundraiser will not fix inequity. Yet, we must start somewhere.

In-District Transfer Round Two Open

The second window for in-district transfer applications opens today. Logan families currently enrolled in Y5-4th grade do not need to reapply. Your child’s enrollment will continue next year. 

Fifth grade families who attend Logan as an in-district transfer or school of choice student MUST apply for in-district transfer to attend Clague or any of the other AAPS middle schools. If you have a fifth grade student and you live in Logan’s attendance boundary, your child’s enrollment will automatically transfer to Clague next year. No further action is needed. However, if you want your child to attend a different AAPS middle school, you must also apply for in-district transfer.
