Dear Logan Families,

This will be my final Weekly Update of 2021. Before we wrap up 2021, I just want to wish everyone a very restful break. I hope you have time to rest, relax and enjoy time with family and friends. We will look forward to welcoming your kids back to school on Monday, January 3, 2022.

In this Weekly Update, I’ve included information about:

Logan Safety Updates/Reminders

On Wednesday, we have a lockdown drill scheduled. This drill was scheduled at the beginning of the year, but in light of the recent school shootings in Oxford and the recent school closures, we are making some adjustments to how we will run this drill. The Logan staff wants to be mindful of students who may be feeling anxious while balancing the need to ensure our school is prepared for various emergencies. Therefore, instead of doing an actual lockdown drill, we will be using the time for all teachers to review safety procedures with their classes. These conversations will be conducted in developmentally appropriate ways, and we will be mindful of the emotional well-being of our students. We wanted to give families a heads-up so you could be prepared for follow up conversations at home.

Additionally, I want to remind all Logan families that visitors are restricted from entering the building at this time. All visitors should come to the front door and use the buzzer to speak with the office staff. We will be happy to help you. Thanks for your understanding and cooperation.

Important Upcoming Dates

  • Friday, December 17 - Last day before winter break

  • Monday, January 3 - School resumes

  • Wednesday, January 5 - Logan PTO Meeting at 9:00 AM

  • Monday, January 17 - Martin Luther King Day, No school for students and staff

  • Wednesday, January 26 - Early Release Day, 1:18 PM dismissal

Tuesday, December 7, 2021

Dear Logan Families,

Sorry for the late update this week. I wanted to let everyone know that our return to school yesterday went very smoothly. The children seemed happy to be at school and there were very few reports of students having a hard time. Our teachers reported having good, reassuring conversations in class, and we maintained our normal classroom routines. If your child is struggling at all, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We are here to support!

This Weekly Update is a short one.

Report Card Reminder

Report cards will be sent home electronically on Tuesday, November 30 after 4:00pm. IEP progress reports will be sent home as hard copies on Tuesday, November 30 as well.

AAPS Weather Guidelines

I want to remind all Logan families that we go outside every day. Please send appropriate clothing for the weather every day. On days when the temperature and/or wind chill are below 0ºF students will not have recess outside. We will also stay inside if there is significant rain. All other times, we go out! Make sure your child is prepared!

Label Clothes

With all of the additional winter clothing coming to school, our lost and found is beginning to fill up. We’ll have some opportunities for kids to come claim lost items, but we highly recommend labeling ALL clothing items your child brings to school. This includes jackets, hats, gloves, scarves, boots, etc. It makes it so much easier to return lost items to the students when they’re labeled.

November 15, 2021

Dear Logan Families,

Last week, Logan families received a number of COVID-19 case notifications from me. In total, we had 6 cases reported at Logan last week. On Friday, we offered free COVID-19 tests to students in four classes that were most impacted. Our AAPS nursing team tested 44 students and staff and all tests came back negative. We were very pleased with these results, but remain concerned about the number of cases in our school. I am asking the entire Logan community to continue to screen your children for symptoms and keep them home if they're feeling ill. If anyone in your household tests positive for COVID-19, please let us know immediately. Thank you in advance for your continued support and cooperation.

In this weekly update, I’ve included information about:

  • Outdoor Lunch Options

  • Early Release Reminder

  • A2 Virtual Option Reminder

  • Important Upcoming Dates

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

Outdoor Lunch Options

We will be making some adjustments to our lunch procedures as the weather turns colder. We will continue to bring the kids outside on days that are warmer (above 40 degrees). If it is colder than 40 degrees, we’ll allow students to eat indoors. However, we would like to continue to offer an outdoor option to anyone who wants to eat outside on colder days. We tested this system today and about half the kids still elected to eat outside. The availability of this option depends on the number of staff members and volunteers we have because it requires enough adults to supervise both playgrounds, the cafeteria, the gym, and an outdoor eating area. On days when we have enough adults to supervise all these locations, we will offer an optional outdoor lunch option. If we don’t have enough staff and volunteers, all students will eat indoors. Please talk to your kids about your family’s preferences so they know what to choose on days when an outdoor option is available. Keep in mind that eating outdoors decreases your child’s chances of becoming a close contact and thus the potential for having to miss school. If you would like your child to eat outdoors on days when it is available, please instruct them to do so.

Also, to help facilitate this option, please consider volunteering at lunchtime. The PTO shares a signup every week in their eBackpack. I’ve linked it below as well.

Early Release Reminder

Wednesday, November 17, 2021 is an Early Release Day. Students will be dismissed at 1:18pm. Lunch will be served prior to dismissal. Please make plans to have your child picked up from school early on Wednesday. Bus service will be available for students who ride a bus.

A2 Virtual Option Reminder

Over the past trimester, I have had conversations with some families that expressed interest in exploring online instruction that is offered through the A2 Virtual Village.  While we’d love to keep your child here at Logan, families have an opportunity to adjust their enrollment selection for the second trimester. As you consider your options, please note that enrollment in online programs is based on available space.

More information about the online programs is available on the A2 Virtual Village website.  You are welcome to email any questions that you may have to a2velementary@a2schools.org.

Monday, November 8, 2021

Dear Logan Families,

Thank you so much to the Logan PTO for hosting such a fun outdoor Beats and Treats! We hope you and your family had a great time!

Last week, we learned that pediatric vaccines are now available to children, ages 5-11. AAPS continues to encourage all who are eligible to get vaccinated. This now includes our elementary students! For those contemplating the decision, I wanted to highlight one key aspect of our COVID-19 mitigation strategies as it relates to vaccinations. When cases occur at our school, any unvaccinated student or staff member identified as a close contact must quarantine. This has meant missed days of school for some of our Logan Leopards. However, vaccinated students and staff DO NOT need to quarantine when they’re identified as a close contact as long as they remain asymptomatic. It is my sincere hope that as more students are vaccinated, we will have fewer students who must quarantine and miss school as a result of close contact in the coming months!

Dear Logan Families,

Wow! We had such a successful Fun Run last week. The weather was perfect for a day of running, and we finished the day with treats from the Kona Shaved Ice truck. Thank you to our Logan PTSO for organizing such a fantastic event. And, thank you to the entire Logan community for supporting our fundraising efforts. The official numbers aren’t in yet, but so far, we’ve raised over $16,000! This money will go directly to programming for students here at Logan. It helps fund teacher vouchers to purchase supplies for kids, activities like Beats and Treats and the Spring Carnival, enrichment activities, and more! Thank you for your generosity and for supporting our school!

I spent the day taking photos, and I’ve uploaded them into this Google folder (Link removed for this blog. Logan families can check their emails to access photos). Feel free to download any pictures of your kids. We will not be sharing them publicly.

Introducing Logan’s New PE Teacher

I am pleased to share that we have hired a new PE teacher. As you know, Ms. Singleton resigned in early Fall for personal reasons. Steve Kahldon will be Logan’s new PE teacher. Mr. Kahldon grew up in Michigan and lived in Arizona for the past 35 years.  He attended college at Arizona State University and also received his M. Ed at ASU.  Mr. Kahldon was on the bowling team at ASU for 4 years.  He has coached both baseball and basketball for 35 years. Mr. Kahldon has a background in biomechanics and was an assistant trainer for an Olympic gold medal sprinter.  Mr. Kahldon writes, “I am looking forward to getting to know all of the awesome Logan students!”

M-STEP Reports

Last Spring, a few Logan families opted to have their children take the M-STEP. M-STEP reports will be coming home this Thursday. Only those families who opted into the test will receive a report.
