Dear Logan Families,

We had a great first week of school, capped off with our Opening Assembly on Thursday. During the assembly, we greeted our students in many languages spoken within our school community, including Arabic, Chinese, English, Japanese, Korean, Italian, Russian, and Spanish. We also welcomed everyone using American Sign Language and an Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) device, so students could see the various ways people communicate in our community. Following the greetings, I read the book All Are Welcome by Alexandra Penfold and Suzanne Kaufman to the school community. We introduced the entire Logan staff to the students, and the assembly concluded on the playground with our annual flag-raising ceremony led by our student safeties. It was a lovely end to a great first week of school!

In this Weekly Update, I’ve included information about:

  • Power Outage at Logan
  • Logan Fall After-School Classes
  • Volunteering at Logan
  • We’re Hiring: Become a Lunchroom Supervisor!

Will Wright

Power Outage at Logan

We had a bit of excitement today! As you may have heard, the power went out this morning just before 11:00 a.m. Our staff did a great job supporting students through the outage, and the kids stayed calm and went with the flow as we waited for DTE to restore power. We maintained our normal school routines as best as possible. The power was restored around 12:30 p.m., and we continued with our school day as usual for the remainder of the day.

Meet the Office Staff

Last week, I introduced our new teachers and paraprofessionals. This week, I’d like to introduce our office staff. I am joined in the office by our office professional, Christy Landefeld and our Teacher Clerk, Sarah Jenkins. Sarah is a familiar face at Logan as she has served as a building sub for several years. She is transitioning to a new role this year as our Teacher Clerk after Geralyn Kowalski retired last year. We also work closely with our school nurse, Emily Ferreira, who is at Logan twice per week. Please feel free to reach out with any questions you may have. I’ve listed each of our email addresses below. When emailing us about attendance, please use the Logan attendance email address.

Principal: Will Wright, wrightw@aaps.k12.mi.us

Office Professional: Christy Landefeld, landefeldc@aaps.k12.mi.us

Teacher Clerk: Sarah Jenkins, jenkinss@aaps.k12.mi.us

Logan Attendance Email: log_attendance@aaps.k12.mi.us

Driveline and Dismissal

Driveline numbers were sent out last week, and new families will receive a hangtag with your Driveline number by the end of the week. Returning families can use the same tag from last year. Driveline is a dismissal program we use at Logan to ensure a safe dismissal. We ask all families to read through our dismissal procedures in the Logan Families Handbook. A few key reminders:

  • Buses park next to the lower elementary playground. Parents should NOT enter the back parking lot. There is no car drop off or pick up in the back parking lot.

  • Parents picking up can wait in the car line. If you wait in the car line, you MUST stay in your car. If you wish to meet your child at their classroom, you must park in the Logan parking lot or in the street on Traver Blvd.

  • Parents waiting in the car line should pull all the way forward. Keep pulling forward as cars in front of you exit. Do not leave space in front of you so we can fit as many cars in the pick up line as possible. Do not load until you reach the front steps.

  • Only cross in the crosswalk and wait for our staff to stop the cars. Please do not walk between cars with your kids.

  • Remember, right turn only when exiting Logan. AAPD does patrol the area and we don’t want anyone getting a ticket.

  • BE PATIENT! Our priority is safety. Our staff are there to help ensure a smooth and safe dismissal. Please listen to them.

Dear Logan Families,

Only one more week until we launch the 24-25 school year! This week, our staff is busy setting up classrooms and preparing for the arrival of our Logan Leopards. I have a few new updates for this week’s Weekly update, but many important details were shared in last week’s letter/blog. If you missed that message, please scroll down and review it as well.

In this Weekly Update, I’ve included information about:

  • Introducing New Logan Staff

  • Help Logan Launch the School Year

  • Logan Family Handbook

  • Space Available Bussing

  • Important Upcoming Dates

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

Introducing New Logan Staff

Logan’s staff remains relatively stable, though we did experience some shifts in our staffing over the summer. Logan families will continue to see many familiar faces this year as well as a few new faces. This summer, we had to say farewell to:

  • Laura Emmer, Logan Kindergarten Teacher

  • Carolyn Wood, Logan Fifth Grade Teacher

  • Jill Lemmens, Logan Resource Room Teacher

  • Sarah Taylor, Logan EL Teacher

  • Henry Blackson-Pakela, Logan Band Teacher

  • Timario Wilkins, Logan Orchestra Teacher

  • Susan Cavanaugh, Logan TA

Some have retired. Some have moved onto new positions. We wish all of them luck in their new endeavors!

We welcome the following new staff members to Logan.

  • Justin Hammis, Logan Band Teacher

  • Cheri Antonow, Logan Social Worker

  • Paris Soofi, Logan TA

Help Logan Launch the School Year

As we launch the school year, we could use your help! We are looking for volunteers to help with buses during arrival and dismissal and to help out in the lunchroom.

  • Arrival and Dismissal times are very busy at Logan. During the first week, students often need assistance finding their classrooms in the morning and finding their proper bus at the end of the school day. The PTSO is looking for volunteers to help direct students to where they need to go during both of these times.  This will be an outdoor volunteer position. You can sign up to be a bus helper here: Bus Helper Volunteers

  • Lunch is one of our busiest times of day, if you are available to volunteer in the lunchroom, we would love to have you! Volunteers will assist students as needed with going through the cafeteria line, opening food items, ensuring students are managing their time and eating their meals, as well as cleaning up after themselves. Please review the available slots below and click on the button to sign up. Feel free to sign up for a partial time slot and note the time you are available. Lunchroom Helper Volunteers.

Logan Family Handbook

We publish a Family Handbook every year. It is full of information for families, and I ask everyone to take some time to read it. It is posted on our website, and it is our hope that it answers many of your questions. Feel free to reach out to me or your child’s teacher if you have any questions.

Space Available Busing

In an effort to increase access and opportunity for all students, students may ride District school buses from a regularly established and scheduled bus stop on a "Space Available Basis."  This service is available to those students that live in the Ann Arbor Public Schools' attendance area, but do not live in the school's transportation area.   Families interested in Space Available Transportation must apply annually through the District and abide by all regulations, rules and guidelines set forth under this policy. Parents of AAPS resident students interested in accessing Space Available Transportation should fill out this form: AAPS Space Available Application form

Applications will be accepted beginning October 1, 2024, and will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis. You must apply each year for a space available bus seat on an AAPS route.

New Family Orientation

New to Logan? Please join us on Thursday, August 22, 2024 at 3:45pm for a New Family Orientation. We will have a tour of the building, share some vital information about starting the year at Logan, and answer your questions. You will also have some time to meet other new families. Afterwards, you can join the whole school community for the Welcome Back Meet and Greet.

Welcome Back Meet and Greet

Please join us on Thursday, August 22, 2024 for our Welcome Back Meet and Greet. The event will take place from 4:30pm - 5:30pm on the Lower Elementary Playground (weather permitting). Come and meet your child’s teachers, see old and new friends, and enjoy a delicious popsicle!

Class Placement Notification

Class placement notifications will be sent via email on Tuesday, August 20, 2024. Notifications will go out in the evening. Please wait until Wednesday, August 21 to contact the Logan office if you do not receive your child’s class placement notification.

We take great care in creating balanced classes. We consider many variables when creating these classes, and we are confident these groupings will meet the needs of our students. If you feel that you need to discuss your child’s placement, we ask all families to complete the first two weeks of school before contacting me.

First Day of School

The first day of school is Monday, August 26, 2024. The first bell rings at 8:42am and school begins at 8:45am. We will dismiss at 3:48pm.

PTSO Welcome Back Coffee

Families are invited to join us for a welcome back coffee on the first day of school, Monday, August 28 at immediately after drop off. It will be an opportunity to meet other families as well as some of our PTSO representatives. We hope to see you there!

School Calendars

Families can review the district calendar on the district’s calendar page. Families can subscribe to Logan’s Community Calendar using this link. It is a Google calendar. We will be adding events to this calendar in the coming days.

Free Breakfast & Lunch 2024-2025

A breakfast program is available to any student every morning in the school cafeteria. No advance ordering is required. Breakfast typically includes these choices: cold cereal, bagel, cheese stick, muffin, waffle, milk and juice. Students may bring a lunch from home or eat a school lunch. Menus are available online

For the 2024-2025 school year, lunch and breakfast is free for all students. As part of the Michigan law that provides free lunch to all students, all families, regardless of income, must complete the free and reduced lunch application. These applications are vital to our district’s funding, enabling us to secure crucial financial support from state and federal governments. Completing the application takes a few minutes; you only need one per household. The application will be available in opening day packets, at the office, and online
