You’re Invited to our NAAPID Celebration

Each year, AAPS celebrates NAAPID across the district. NAAPID stands for National African American Parent Involvement Day, and it was started by Joseph Dulin who was a longtime principal in the Ann Arbor Public Schools. You can learn more about NAAPID here. In the past, Logan has invited ALL families to join us for a day of learning. Because of this pandemic, we’re obviously going to have to do things a little differently, but we are excited to keep this tradition alive. Here are the plans.

1. Parents are invited to read a story in your child’s class during the week of February 8 (and possible beyond depending on how many families want to read). Your child’s teacher will be reaching out to families with invitations to schedule a visit.
2. Join us for an assembly on February 8 at 1:00pm. We’ll be celebrating Black History Month with a reading of The Undefeated by Kwame Alexander. Students will share facts about some of the historical figures featured in this text. We’ll also have a special message of gratitude for our Logan families. We hope you can make it. Links will be shared later in the week.

Parent/Guardian Support Groups and Workshops

Connecting Together, our Twice-a-month Drop-in support groups for parents and guardians of student's in AAPS continues in 2021.Connect with other parents to find support and get ideas about how to face the challenges of 2020. Please see dates and times and register here. We also offer parent support groups in Spanish, Korean, Chinese, Arabic and Japanese. See the dates for these groups and register for bilingual groups here.

Additionally, we are excited to offer: Pandemic Parenting: Parent Self-care and Social-Emotional Learning Workshops: 

In this 2-Part workshop series parents will learn self-care strategies for themselves and how to reinforce the social-emotional curriculum in school. Participants can join for one or both workshops. Learn more and register here!

AAPS Rec and Ed Programs

Rec & Ed’s Winter programs are starting! Visit aarecedonline.com to register for programs for preschoolers through senior adults. Rec & Ed also continues to offer free programs for PreK - 8th grade students on Wednesdays and Saturdays, both virtually and in-person, outside school buildings across the community. Our programs are designed to keep kids active through fun virtual and outdoor activities, providing a safe opportunity to be active and social. For dates, locations and registration, click here.

Specials Supplies Letter

Last Friday, we sent a list of supplies needed for specials. Logan families can expect to start receiving this supply list every Friday afternoon. We hope that this additional communication will help you prepare for the week and make life a little more manageable in your household.

Included in this Friday communication was an announcement that we’re doing a mini-distribution on Tuesday, January 26 from 4:00pm until 5:00pm. We’ll be distributing PLTW supplies to first grade students only. All first-grade students will start a PLTW Science unit in February where they will study light waves and sound waves. As part of this unit, the PLTW department is providing every first-grade student with a flashlight, rubber band and a set of 6 translucent tiles or magna-tiles. These items will be an important part of PLTW so if you do not already have these items on hand please plan to pick up a set.

Author Visit

All Ann Arbor families are welcome to attend this special FREE Zoom lunch with author Josh Funk, author of It's Not Hansel and Gretel, How to Code a Sandcastle, and lots of other celebrated books for young readers! Click here for more information, including a link to order signed copies of Josh's books and a form where students may ask questions in advance. Free Virtual Science Game Night for AAPS Students

Alpha Epsilon Delta, a pre-health organization at the University of Michigan is planning an online volunteer event for our community! 

All Elementary Students are welcome to sign up for a virtual science game night on Wednesday, February 10th at 4pm. 

Students and U-M volunteers will gather together on a Zoom call to play fun science games and get to talk about life with older mentors! 

The event should last around 30 minutes.

MLK Assembly Video Link

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our assembly honoring Dr. King last Friday. If you were unable to attend, Ms. Joslin helped create a musical performance of Lift Every Voice and Sing. It was inspiring, and your kids did such a beautiful job performing. You can view that performance here.

Lexia Reminder

I wanted to remind all families about Lexia Core 5. This program is used in all of our classrooms (except Y5s) and is part of our core reading curriculum. The goal is to complete all Lexia levels by the end of fifth grade. Each student in the program should spend time everyday working through it. We fully recognize the challenges families face managing online school, and we hear the concerns many have about screen time. Therefore, I offer this as a gentle reminder that if possible, we would appreciate your support with having kids complete their Lexia minutes each week.

Dear Logan Families, 

I want to thank the Logan staff for helping students navigate and understand their community, country and world as they once again witnessed unprecedented historical events this past week. Following the riots at the Capitol last week, our staff created spaces for children to discuss the events they witnessed. They did so in developmentally appropriate ways while helping guide students’ understanding and reassuring them that Logan and their community continue be safe and welcoming places. At Logan, we remain committed to our core values. We celebrate the diversity of this community, we will continue to ensure that all voices are heard, and we strive to ensure that all people are treated with equal respect. Report Cards

All report cards were sent to parent/guardian emails prior to break. Families of students with IEPs should have received progress reports via US Postal Service as well. If you did not receive any of the reports, please contact your child’s teachers or service provider.

Changes to Logan’s English Language Learning Department

Please join me in congratulating Suzanne Vu on becoming Ann Arbor Public Schools' new EL Teacher Lead. In her new role, Ms. Vu will be helping to coordinate and support EL services across AAPS. In order to tackle these new responsibilities, she will be reducing her time at Logan to half-time. Therefore, in order to maintain EL services for Logan students, I am very pleased to welcome Caley McMillan to the Logan staff. She has been an EL teacher for the past four years in the AAPS EL department, most recently splitting her time between Bach and Dicken Elementary. Ms. McMillan has a teaching degree from Easter Michigan University with a certification in Language Arts and TESOL. Please join me in welcoming Ms. McMillan to Logan. Together, Ms. Vu and Ms. McMillan will be working to support Logan’s English Language Learners.

Spirit Week

Student Council is hosting a spirit week during the week of December 14 through December 18. Help your children show their school spirit by dressing up each day. Here’s the schedule:

• Monday – Pajama Day
• Tuesday – Choice: Dress Like a Teacher Day or Twin Day
• Wednesday – Crazy Hair Day
• Thursday – Beach Day
• Friday – Color Wars (Wear your grade level team’s colors

Snap a picture of your little ones and post them on social media. Use the hashtag #LoganSpiritWeek and tag us.

Report Cards

Later this week, you’ll receive a report card from your child’s teacher. Report cards will be sent to parent/guardian email addresses. Students in our self-contained classes will have report cards mailed directly to your homes. Students with IEPs will receive progress reports via USPS as well. The report cards speak to several of our teaching and learning objectives from the first term.  As you might expect, remote learning impacts how well our teachers are able to understand and know some of your child’s social, emotional and academic skills.  With this in mind, you may see blanks for some outcomes on the report card.  The blanks could indicate either a need for collecting more information or that the outcome will not be assessed until later in the year (i.e. Term 2 or 3).  If this is the case, check the comment section.

Great Lake Great Books Series

In library class, students are participating in an activity called Great Lakes Great Books. Each year, Michigan librarians and teachers nominate exceptional books and Michigan K-12 students vote for their favorites. The winners are announced at the annual Michigan Reading Association conference each year. You can find a complete list of the nominated Great Lakes Great Book here. At Logan, students in grades K-1 are reading the K-1 book list, and students in grades 2-5 are reading books from the 2-3 book list.

Literature is a powerful tool to learn about other people, communities, and cultures, and many of the books included in this Great Lakes Great Books series will allow students to do just that. Amy Rodriguez, Logan's librarian, has compiled a document summarizing each of the books. I am attaching that document to this weekly update so families can familiarize themselves with the books in the series. They represent a collection of diverse stories that can lead to rich discussions in your home.

A2 Virtual Information

Over the past semester, I have had conversations with some families that expressed interest in exploring asynchronous instruction that is offered through A2 Virtual+ Elementary.  While we’d love to keep your child here at Logan at this time we are offering families an opportunity to adjust their enrollment selection. As you consider your options, please note that the Classroom Connect program and A2Virtual Academy follow different pacing and sequencing of the learning standards. This may result in gaps and overlaps of instruction.
